Vietnamese Green Robusta Coffee Beans

Robusta originates from West Africa, specifically from the Belgian Congo, and was later brought to Java, Indonesia, by the Dutch in 1876 to replace Arabica Typica, which suffered from leaf drop disease and low yield. In Vietnam, Robusta is the dominant coffee variety.
The name "Robusta" comes from the word "robust," meaning strong. Therefore, Robusta coffee is characterized by its strong flavor and high caffeine content. Its scientific name is Coffea robusta, and in Vietnam, it is commonly referred to as Vối coffee. Robusta beans contain between 2-4% caffeine, have a more intense flavor, and are round and smaller than Arabica beans. In fact, Robusta is a relatively new coffee variety that has quickly gained popularity in many countries due to its ease of care, cultivation, and high resistance to pests and diseases. In Vietnam, Robusta is known as cà phê Vối.

The Robusta coffee plant is a woody shrub that can reach heights of up to 10 meters. The coffee cherries are round, and the beans are smaller than those of Arabica. The caffeine content in Robusta beans is about 2-4%, while in Arabica, it is only about 1-2%.

Like Arabica, a Robusta coffee plant can begin to be harvested at around 3-4 years of age. The plant yields beans for approximately 20 to 30 years. Robusta coffee thrives in tropical regions, with an ideal growing altitude of under 1000 meters. The preferred temperature for the plant is between 24-29°C, with rainfall exceeding 1000 mm. Robusta requires more sunlight than Arabica. Nearly 90% of the coffee grown in Vietnam is Robusta, particularly in the Central Highlands, including Buôn Ma Thuột, Đắk Lắk, Gia Lai, and Lâm Đồng. Currently, Vietnam is the largest exporter of Robusta in the world.
Robusta coffee has less acidity than Arabica (lower acidity), but it is more bitter and has a more pungent flavor.
