Coffee in Panama began developing in the 19th century when European immigrants brought coffee beans to the region. To prevent pests and diseases and provide suitable climate conditions, coffee was cultivated in the Chiriqui highlands at the base of the Volcán Barú volcano in western Panama. This was a crucial turning point that opened up opportunities for the development of Panamanian coffee in this area.
The Boquete region is located on the eastern slope of the Barú Volcano. It is divided into smaller areas such as Bajo Boquete, Alto Boquete, Caldera, Jaramillo, and Palmira. To the south is a valley, with the Barú Volcano to the west and the Tamaranka Mountain Range to the north.
Boquete is fortunate to have rich soil and a unique climate that helps the coffee beans thrive and produce high-quality coffee, making it the number one specialty coffee-producing region in Panama.
The coffee plants here grow vigorously, producing SHB-grade coffee beans with a long ripening process and high sugar content, resulting in a distinctively sweet and full-bodied flavor. Each subregion also imparts unique and distinctive flavor profiles to the coffee.
