Although located within the homeland of Ethiopian coffee, the world has only known Sidamo for a few decades. The Sidamo region was formed in 1942 after Ethiopia gained independence from Italy. The name Sidamo is also taken from the Sidama ethnic group in the area. Therefore, in addition to Sidamo, Sidama is another name used to refer to this region.
Sidamo is one of 3 growing regions that the Ethiopian government registered as a trademark in 2004 to promote the country's flagship coffee. The diverse flavor profile has helped Sidamo Ethiopian coffee gain worldwide attention. As one of the major coffee producing regions, Sidamo supplies over 40% of the green coffee to the Ethiopian coffee market. Sidamo has proven itself to be one of the top regions for high-quality coffee production.
