Coffee grown in Indonesia has a long history. Initially, coffee only grew wild in Ethiopia, but through Yemen, Dutch colonists brought the coffee plant to Indonesia in 1699. The coffee plant thrived, and Indonesia quickly became the world's largest coffee producing country.
There are three main coffee growing regions on the island of Sumatra: northern Aceh, south of Lake Toba, and around the island of Mangkuraja. Arabica coffee from North Sumatra is renowned for its bold, complex flavor, low acidity, spicy, and earthy taste.
Sumatra produces two of the highest quality and most famous coffee varieties in the world - Mandheling and Ankola. Along with Toraja, Mandheling is one of the most sought-after coffees among coffee connoisseurs.
While the north is famous for Arabica coffee, southern Sumatra is renowned for its Robusta coffee. This region plays a crucial role in Indonesia's coffee production and export, accounting for two-thirds of the country's total annual output, which is 2.6 times the production of Arabica coffee.
